Despite six years of crisis in Syria, agriculture remains a key part of the economy. The sector still accounts for an estimated 26 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) and represents a critical safety net for the 6.7 million Syrians – including those internally displaced - who still remain in rural areas.
Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has conducted the first comprehensive nationwide assessment on the cost of the war to the agriculture sector.
FAO's top priority in Syria is to help the most vulnerable to improve their access to food, nutrition and income through seed assistance.
FAO seeks to understand the needs to ensure a coordinated response based on evidences and also monitors the impact of the crisis through a combination of regular analysis of the food security data, and conducting evaluations with partners, coordinating the humanitarian response in the food security and agriculture sectors together with the World Food Program in Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria.
